TECHNICAL FAQ - Streaming Flash Videos (online viewing) Is streaming available?
If you do not wish to download the videos or just want a preview before downloading the whole video, you can stream the video in two qualities in Windows Media only. The quality is lower and the size of the video is much smaller to handle the video streams.
Do I need a Flash application to watch?
Flash 8 or later is required to view our full-length videos. Click here to Download Flash for FREE.
Minimum System Requirements?
For the best experience, we recommend at minimum: PC: Win98/P4 1.5Ghz CPU/128MB ram/32MB Video card MAC: Apple Mac G4 running OSX 10.2.8, 1.5Ghz CPU, 256MB Ram
Will the video play on my browser?
The flash videos are 100% cross platform and cross browser. As long as you have Flash 8+ the videos will play.
How do I know if player software is installed?
No action on your behalf is required. Before the player is loaded, it will detect if you have the required software. If you don’t have it, you will be prompted to install it.
Why are there stops or gaps while streaming media?
Poor sound/video quality, excessive buffering, and/or delays in connectivity are usually due to stressed or strained bandwidth on behalf of your ISP and the bandwidth that your ISP has available for Internet connectivity. Many Internet users are probably dialed-in to your ISP, causing congested lines and using up most or all of the bandwidth.
Other factors that may affect available bandwidth or the quality of your viewing experience are: simultaneous network activity on your computer, wireless network usage, cable modems, general Internet congestion, time of day, and general computer power.
Things you can try to improve your viewing experience:
• Minimize the amount of other Internet or network usage during viewing
• Use a physical network connection, if available (instead of a busy wireless connection)
• Try smaller video options
Do I have a potential firewall problem?
If you are having trouble playing audio or video content and your computer is on a network protected by a firewall, the firewall may not be configured correctly to allow the reception of audio and video streams. Contact your IS or Network Manager or Internet Service Provider (ISP) to determine whether a firewall is preventing you from playing content.
Will your videos play on my MAC or UNIX computer?
As long as you have flash player 8+ you will have no problems with your MAC or Unix. Click here to Download Flash for FREE.
Why is my streaming not working in Firefox?
Firefox sometimes has problems registering .dll files and you may not have the plugin for Windows Media Player installed properly. Uninstalling and reinstalling WMP doesn't work. There is a fix for this and can be found here: MozillaZine.
In summary, you need to go to DllDump.com and get three files. npdsplay.dll, npwmsdrm.dll and npdrmv2.dll. All three files need to be placed in your Windows Media Player folder (usually C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player). All you have to do is close and open Firefox, and the plugin for Windows Media Player should be found.
TECHNICAL FAQ - DOWNLOADING VIDEOS What is the latest player I need to use?
My videos come in two formats: Quicktime and Windows Media. Quicktime will give you the best quality and experience. Both formats are intended for broadband users and all videos are downloadable. There is also a modem version available, though the size and quality will be much inferior.
You need to have the latest versions of the player or you will not be able to see or hear the videos properly. To get the latest free players click here for Quicktime or click here for Windows Media.
Windows Media - The videos on this site are best suited for play in Windows Media 10 or above. Most videos are 720x480, encoded at 1024k, and are usually about 100megs. The videos are not protected by DRM, so they will play after you leave the site. This is a "nice" thing to do, so please don’t share the videos. You should also consider joining the site recurring or re-joining on occasion as a way to thank me for going against the wave of copy protection madness.
If you are having problems playing the videos, make sure you are using Windows Media 10, with XP as your OS. Sometimes the best course of action is to fully install 10, fully remove it, then reinstall. Often your system will have a faulty codec, and even installing a new version will not overwrite it until you install, uninstall, the reinstall. This process is recommended at least once a year as garbage gets added to your media player routinely.
Quicktime 7 - All of the videos are released in Quicktime 7 format (H.264). The videos are sized at 320x240 for iPod compatibility. They are smaller in width/height than the Windows Media format, but the quality of the compression is quite nice.
You don't have to be on Mac to play these. Quicktime 7 is available for Windows XP, and will play on that setup as well. OSX users may have some luck playing the Windows Media format in their Quicktime player also. Flip4Mac makes a plugin, and you can find more info and download it from here. How do I play/download videos?
You SHOULD download videos to your hard drive and play them from there. If you are experiencing a lot of buffering delays, your connection probably isn't fast enough to accommodate the file size you are trying to view. In that case, it is better to download the file first and then view it. You can do this by right-clicking on the video file link and selecting "Save Target As..." from the popup menu that appears. Specify a location for the downloaded file. Once the download is complete, you can view the video.
Why do I have problems downloading videos or with AEBN Feeds?
If you get a dialog box that says "Server Not Found" when attempting to download a video, you may have your Privacy tab on your browser set too high. Cookies MUST be enabled in order to use this site.
Also, Internet Security Software (Firewall, Anti-Spyware, AV software) will also stop you from being redirected to the video server as well as the AEBN feeds. AEBN suggests temporarily disabling your Internet Security Software, and this usually works like a charm, but leaves you open for malicious activity.
Why do I get “Server not Found?”
Check your computer system’s date and time if you get "Server Not Found" while downloading or streaming, and you are certain you have your Security Software disabled or configured properly. When you go to download a video, the system checks to see if your cookies have expired, and if the date is off or invalid, then the system thinks you've "timed out" and the session is no longer valid. So make sure your system’s clock is correct!
Will your videos play on PDA's or iPods?
The MP4 files will play on video iPods so you can enjoy our videos on the move. However, we don't support PDA users.
Why is iTunes playing the Quicktime Video in the tiny little window?
You likely updated either iTunes or Quicktime and it got "bossy" and decided that it was now responsible for playing your media files. Don't double click the video and rely on your computer to "know" what program you want to open it up in. Open up Quicktime FIRST, then do a File, Open, and browse over to the video. As an AOL user, how do I best view pictures?
To get clearer .jpeg photo images, go to your AOL tool bar, click My AOL and then choose Preferences, then WWW, then the tab that says Web Graphics. Then uncheck the box "Use Compressed Graphics." This will increase the quality of most web images by preventing the AOL browser from converting .jpeg files into AOL's .art files. Any images already viewed (temporary Internet files) will remain Art files until your temporary Internet files are "deleted." Also, to ensure that you are always getting the latest updates, under the GENERAL tab, go to the section addressing Temporary Internet Files and click on SETTINGS. Then choose the option "Check for new versions of the page every time you visit the page." This will greatly enhance your visits.
Do you support WebTV and Linux?
Unfortunately, at this time there is no support for WebTV or Linux systems.
NOTE: Ultimately, a broadband connection, a fast computer with lots of RAM, and the latest version of your video player will give you the best experience.
